If you put yourself in the position of the business owner you're visiting, you might realize that they are mostly interested in how you can help their business grow.
Think about it for a minute... you go in to share membership information and you start out talking about the value of membership and all the things they receive for being a member. You might even share how they can login and promote their business.
Then you might talk about your events and further explain that they can also network with other people to help grow their business.
All of this is really good information and valuable, but the prospect is likely translating all of this into more things they have to do.
Since so many business leaders are already overloaded in just running their business what you might think is a positive for them... might actually be just the oposite.
Although the prospect seems friendly enough, they are still thinking that you are mostly interested in getting them to become a member. Change That!
There may be nothing wrong with the statement above, but if they start to realize that you can help them in the SHORT-TERM, with little for them to do, they might actually be happy you are there.
You can easily keep the conversation going when you tell them that any investment they make in membership will be off-set by a valuable Return-on-Investment.
At this point you are building a reputation around being sure that they are going to be well served and proving that to them every month.
Tell them if they decide to become a member you will be documenting their products and services for search.

People use their phones, computers, and tablets to search for just about anything online using their voice and keyboards.
